New to Tri and Back to Tri

Athy Triathlon Club has been running a six week introduction/re-introduction to triathlon since 2020. The programme sees prospective triathletes engage in a training programme that prepares them for their first triathlon. This year’s New to Tri/Back to Tri will take place between April 16th and May 23rd. At the end of the six weeks, participants will take part in a triathlon. This training triathlon will mostly follow the TriAthy Try-a-Tri course so at this point you will be able to say you are a triathlete and hopefully you will go on to complete many more races. The cost for the six week block is €120 including a Triathlon Ireland (TI) training membership. Please see note on TI membership types below.

One of the greatest benefits of taking part is meeting other people who are setting out on the same path. There’s nothing like working together with like-minded people towards the same goal, sharing the fun, the knowledge and the nerves together as well as the sense of accomplishment on finishing your first triathlon. Of course, we’ll have a participant’s t-shirt for everyone as well as a finisher medal and refreshments at the finish line on May 23rd.

We will host two training sessions per week, run by qualified coaches, including a bike/run session on Tuesday evenings and swim sessions on Thursdays. Both sessions will take place from 7-8pm, with Tuesdays in the grounds of Athy College. The first three weeks of the swim will take place in K-Leisure, Athy before moving to the Barrow from weeks four and five, the final Thursday swim will be part of the training triathlon. The swimming sessions are coached training sessions, not beginner swimming lessons, participants should be able to swim a minimum of 25m without stopping before the programme begins.

In addition to the new to tri training, as full members of the club, participants can take part in general club training sessions, including S+C, running and cycling. This is a great way to meet your fellow members, we’re a very open, welcoming and inclusive club whose members have a wide range of aims and experience and we have plenty to offer in terms of advice and encouragement.

Registration is now open and you can sign up on the Triathlon Ireland website ( https://app.triathlonireland.com/register ) Each participant will require a minimum of a TI training membership (€30) which must be purchased before choosing a club membership (Athy Triathlon Club – New to Tri, €90).

Please note that the TI training membership covers participants for all triathlon related training and training races such as the one at the end of this programme. It does not include non-training races, in order to be covered by TI insurance (mandatory) for races, e.g., TriAthy, a one day membership (€30 per race) or full annual membership (€79) will be required. The difference of €49 between a training membership and a full membership means that if you intend to do more than one race in a season, full membership offers much better value. This would increase the initial cost of the programme but is worth the extra expense if you do even two races.
